Product and model news from OpenAI / Anthropic / Google, with a focus on security-relevant items. Weekend news volume is light; most items below were disclosed in early July and are still developing.
OpenAI
- Jalapeño inference chip(released 7/1) — custom in-house silicon aimed at cutting inference costs; introduces new supply-chain and hardware-attestation considerations for AI infrastructure.
- IPO preparation— reportedly preparing for an IPO as early as September 2026, with a private valuation around $730 billion, and continuing to expand the team ahead of listing.
Anthropic
- Claude Sonnet 5(released 7/1) — its most agentic model to date, able to autonomously drive a browser/terminal, approaching Opus 4.8 performance at markedly lower cost.
- Security implications: Stronger agentic capability both extends defensive automation (agent-driven vulnerability hunting/response) and amplifies the attack surface for prompt injection and tool abuse — echoing this issue's AI security section on "prompt injection still tops the OWASP list."
Google DeepMind / AI
- Nano Banana 2 Lite— the fastest, most cost-effective image-generation model.
- Gemini Omni Flash— a new-generation fast multimodal model.
- Gemini Robotics-ER 1.6— via the Boston Dynamics × Google Cloud partnership, integrated into the Spot robot dog and the Orbit AI visual-inspection platform.
Security takeaways
- Anthropic Sonnet 5's agentic leap is the only frontier item this issue that directly touches security: agents autonomously using browsers/terminals = a larger indirect prompt-injection exposure surface. Defenders should treat "the agent will read untrusted web pages/files" as the default threat model.
- On the hardware side (OpenAI Jalapeño), worth tracking long term: as in-house inference chips proliferate, AI supply-chain integrity (firmware/drivers/compiler toolchains) will become a new offense-defense focal point.
